Water Floo
Back to main.

Water Floo (WF) is a chess engine that implements the popular xboard protocol. It can thus be used with xboard, eboard, winboard or other xboard compatible interfaces.

WF aims to be a multi-threaded pure brute force engine, eventually even massively parallel (eg, spreadable over a network of interconnected computers).
The project was initially motivated by my 9 years old son (back then) who is playing chess on FICS and that came to me all of a sudden saying I should program a computer chess engine to compete against the monster ones ruling FICS with a ELO ranking around 2900 !
While I doubt WF will ever reach such a ranking, I thought it would actually be fun to see what could be done and also a chance to investigate multi threaded programming.
At the time the project started, it needed, foremost, a name: among other silly names, my son spontaneously proposed 'Water Floo' which, though not meaning anything, sounded good enough and got our favor.

WF did not air on FICS yet, but will as soon as it is able to handle clocks properly. WF is still in an early development phase, although it's playable and challenging to beat for a novice to intermediate chess player.
